Safely Handle a Workplace Accident

Learn how to safely deal with an accident at your place of business.

Despite your best safety efforts, a workplace accident can occur without warning.  While you cannot always predict an accident, it’s important that you are well-equipped to handle one when it happens.  Here are some of the steps you should take to help you safely deal with an accident at your place of business.

  • Stay Calm

While this is obvious, it’s important that you stay calm and level headed in the face of an accident.  If you are panicked, then the chaos you create will only make the situation more precarious.  As someone in a leadership position, it’s important that you calmly take charge of the situation and understand what needs to be done to adequately handle the situation.

  • Communicate Effectively

As soon as an accident occurs, it’s important that you contact emergency services right away.  While making the 911 call is the first thing you should do, you also need to know who else to contact in case of an emergency situation.  Your employees should all know who to contact in case and accident does occur.

  • Conduct Basic First-Aid

Basic first-aid skills are often taught as part of workplace safety training.  If you are dealing with an injured worker, then it’s important that you know how to put your first-aid training to good use.  Make sure that all your employees have access to medical supplies should an emergency arise.  When treating an injured worker, it’s important that you do not exceed your skill set.  Do what you can to stabilize or make and injured worker more comfortable, but do not attempt to do more.  Leave the more extensive medical help to the emergency responders.
