National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Month; find out how you can get involved!

This month, it’s time to stand together to find a cure.  Celebrate this National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by doing you part to support the fight against breast cancer.  Together, we can end breast cancer once and for all!

Breast cancer by the numbers

Breast cancer is one of the most devastating diseases in America.  According to breastcancer.org, about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives.  In 2017, over 250,000 women and more than 2,400 men are expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.  For U.S. women, breast cancer is responsible for more cancer-related deaths than any other type of cancer.  Due to the widespread nature of breast cancer, it’s important for men and especially women to be vigilant about their breast health.  That’s where National reast Cancer Awareness Month comes in.

What is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual educational outreach program held every October.  This campaign is meant to spread educational material about breast cancer and to encourage men and women to be proactive about breast cancer screening.  Once of the main goals of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to educate people about mammograms.  Because mammograms are one of the few procedures that can detect breast cancer in its early stages, they are considered one of the most effective tools in the fight against breast cancer.  Early detection can increase your chances of beating breast cancer so, in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, make sure you schedule your annual mammogram today.

How can I get involved?

One way to get involved is to set a good example for your friends and family.  Take a vested interest in your breast health and schedule your mammogram and other check-ups this October.  Additionally, you can help support the search for a cure by donating to legitimate breast cancer research initiatives.  You can also get involved by participating in the many events and fundraisers held throughout the month.  Finally, one of the easiest ways to show your support is by proudly wearing the signature pink breast cancer awareness ribbon.  Encourage your friends and family to also get involved and together we can work to find a cure!
