The American Staffing Association (ASA) will host their annual Staffing Conference, Staffing World, October 25-28, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The event brings together the staffing community, creating an environment where people can share experiences, learn new strategies, and make connections throughout $160 billion staffing services industry.

During the three-day event, Bill Nagel, Senior Vice President and Executive Director of PMC Insurance Group’s StaffPRO3, will be speaking in a breakout session about Workers’ Compensation claims, focusing on maximizing care and minimizing costs. Bill will also take center stage as he has the privilege of introducing the 2023 National Staffing Employee of the Year (NSEY).

Bill Nagel has vast experience in the staffing services sector as well as Workers’ Compensation insurance and risk management services having held multiple positions within these areas. His career started in 1979 with the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), where he was able to segue from end-user to staffing services franchise owner. Bill has also held positions such as, regional vice president, chief executive officer, partner and more. Thanks to his extensive experience in the industry, he has become an expert in safety, loss control, risk management and Workers’ Compensation insurance products all focused on staffing services. According to Bill, after payroll, the highest expense in this industry is Workers’ Compensation insurance costs. He says that the number one priority of any successful manager or owner, outside of the well-being of people, which is the first and most important part of staffing services, is to have the best and most cost-effective Workers’ Compensation insurance program or product.”

Bill’s deep understanding of the profitability factors in the industry, as well as, the risk management and loss control policies that affect the cost of Workers’ Compensation, has given him a lot of unique insights. The risk management best practices he developed are now the basis for the Safety Standard of Excellence, which is a collaborative initiative between the National Safety Council and the ASA.

Notable Speaker 

Another notable speaker in the breakout session will be Sharon Davis, Elwood Staffing Service’s Occupational Safety Manager. Sharon is a seasoned safety and loss prevention professional with vast industry experience. She has been involved in developing people-centered and innovative risk management, health, and safety programs that deliver great and sustainable results. Sharon is also excellent at spotting risk trends as well as, developing mitigation measures through training, education, and loss control programs. Additionally, Sharon is the chairwoman of ASA’s workplace safety committee, a position she has held for the last six years.

How to Best Manage Workers’ Compensation Injuries and Claims

Many staffing executives understand the challenges of working with insurance companies or third-party administrators when dealing with Workers’ Compensation claims and injuries.  It can be difficult to strike a balance between caring for injured workers and effectively managing costs. In this breakout session, the focus will be on how to minimize costs through best-in-class host employer or client site evaluations and risk assessments.

Other topics that will be addressed  include how to provide fast medical treatment and ways to to save on the costs of claims through an effective return-to-work program. This session, covers important aspects of  effectively managing Workers’ Compensation claims from both the carrier and staffing service points of view.
