Impact of Longer Workdays on Truckers and the Industry

Truckers are the lifeline of the e-commerce industry. The trucking industry accounts for 6% of all full-time jobs and is valued at $700 billion. A recent ruling by the U.S. Transportation Department providing short-haul truckers longer workdays could be a game-changer for the e-commerce industry.

How Will Truckers Be Affected?

Longer Days

Short-haul truckers are allowed to work longer days as per these rules. The maximum on-duty period has been extended from 12 hours to 14 hours. The driving time, however, remains unchanged at 11 hours. The extra hours will be used to make deliveries.

Distance Limit

Another significant change for short-haul drivers is the distance they are allowed to cover, which has extended from 100 to 150 miles. They will also be able to make more deliveries in a 100-mile radius.

Duty Break

As far as long-haul truckers are concerned, a 30-minute break will be allowed. Long-haul truckers may use this break to perform any paperwork. This break will not apply to short-haul drivers.

Splitting Duty Hours

A 10-hour duty can be split into two parts. If there are adverse driving conditions, the maximum driving time limit can be extended by up to 2 hours.

How Can Truckers Improve Their Safety?

With longer hours, more miles and working during break times, truckers need to take some precautions:

  • Always wear their seat belt
  • Never use their cell phone while on duty
  • Never drive intoxicated
  • Stick to the speed limits
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Maintain a safe distance from other drivers
  • Stick to the rules of the road

Apart from driving safely, it’s important that truckers take their breaks. For more safety tips and ways to minimize risks, contact the experts at PMC Insurance Group.
