How to Mitigate Motor Vehicle Risks

How to protect employees while they drive.

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of on-the-job fatalities.  If your company’s business operations require employees to drive, then there are steps that you can take to reduce their chance of accidents, injuries, and liability issues.  Here how you can protect employees while they drive.

  • Before allowing an employee to drive company vehicles, check their driving record. If an employee has a history of accidents, speeding, or other instances of reckless driving, then you should reconsider giving them driving privileges.
  • Set guidelines for employees who drive for work. For instance, your company guidelines should require employees to wear seatbelts, prohibit cell phone use while behind the wheel, prohibit driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and so on.  Your company guidelines should also lay out the penalties for breaking driving rules.
  • Require employees to complete driving safety and competency training. During training, your employees should get familiar with company vehicles, get a refresh on traffic laws, and receive training on defensive driving practices.
  • Conduct routine inspections of company vehicles to ensure that they are operating properly and are safe for your employees to drive.
  • Create a protocol for employees to follow if they do get into an accident. If you receive news of an accident, investigate the incident and work with your insurance provider to handle the claim.  Use prior accidents as training opportunities for your other staff.

These are some of the steps what you can take to protect employees while they drive.  Want another way to keep your staff safe?  Then make sure you protect them with the right commercial insurance.  For assistance with all your business insurance needs, contact the experts at PMC Insurance Group today.
