How to Handle an Employee Injury at Work

Learn what you should do if an employee is injured on the job.

While most business owners are aware that they need workers compensation insurance to protect their employees from workplace injuries or illnesses, simply having insurance isn’t enough to help an employee that is injured on the job.  If one of your employees is involved in a workplace accident, then here’s what you need to do.

1) Get Medical Assistance

Even if an employee does not believe that they are seriously injured, it’s important that they are examined by a medical professional.  If you are on the scene at the time of the accident, you should personally see to it that your employee receives the medical attention that they need.  However, sometimes an accident happens when you are not there.  If this is the case, then it’s the responsibility of the injured party to report their injuries to you.  Either way, do your best to make sure that your injured employee receives the medical attention they need to prevent more extensive damage.

2) Investigate

When an employee is injured on the job, it is your responsibility to investigate the incident.  This might involve inspecting the site of the accident, gathering an account from the injured employee, and obtaining any witness statements.  Once you have all the information, use it to improve your safety protocols.  Make sure you document any improvements you make.  Not only will this help prevent accidents in the future, but it will also help you prove that you are taking steps to protect your employees.

3) File a Claim

Finally, you will need to file a workers compensation insurance claim.  Generally, your insurance provider will walk you through this process.  It’s important that you file a claim, regardless of how minor the injury might seem.  Attempting to go around your insurance could put your business in a very precarious situation if your employee’s injuries become more serious or if they decide to sue.
