With Halloween right around the corner, it’s easy to get swept up in all the excitement. However, it’s important to remember that behind all the costumes and candy, Halloween poses its own risks for your children. This year, make sure your kids stay safe by following these Halloween safety tips.
Costumes
When your child is deciding on their costume, make sure you only consider options made from non-flammable materials. You might also want to avoid longer costumes as they may make it difficult for your child to move around safely. Finally, instead of a Halloween face mask, convince your child to use face makeup instead. Wearing a mask could obstruct their vision and might impair their ability to walk around safely.
Traffic
An overly excited trick-or-treater might want to run all over the neighborhood, however try to convicne your child to walk. Running can increase your child’s chances of taking a nasty fall. Additionally, make sure your child doesn’t suddenly dart out into the street. A driver might not be able to see your child or may be unable to stop their car fast enough to avoid tragedy. You should try to incorporate a reflective element in your child’s costume to make them for visible to drivers.
Stranger Danger
Never let your child trick-or-treat alone. If your kid insists of going out without you, make sure he or she is with a group of friends that you know and trust. Before your child goes out, make sure you know where they are going and ask them to stay in familiar neighborhoods. Remind your child to ever enter someone’s house and to never accept a ride without first getting your approval.
Candy and Treats
Once your child returns from trick-or-treating, make sure you examine their haul before they start eating. Look for any unwrapped, unlabeled, or homemade treats and throw them away.
