Factors That Can Affect Your Productivity

Learn about some of the surprising factors that affect productivity levels

Some days, it can seem like you’re sluggish and simply not doing your best.  While these days may seem random, there are several factors that could be contributing to your lower productivity levels.  If you are interested in meeting your full potential and being more productive, then learn about the factors that affect productivity.

1) Refusing to take breaks

While this may seem counter intuitive, taking breaks can actually help you utilize your time better.  If you’ve been focused on a single task for an extended period of time, then your brain is probably exhausted.  When your brain is over-tired or bored, then it can make it harder to focus on the task at hand.  This, in turn, tends to make us less productive.  In order to refresh your brain and get it ready to work, it’s important that you take some time away.  Go for a quick walk, grab a healthy, snack, or simply close your eyes for a while and you’ll find that you’re much more focused when you return to your work.

2) Not getting enough sleep

For many busy people, it’s quite common to stay up late into the night to finish everything they want to get done.  However, depriving yourself of sleep can really affect your productivity.  Not getting enough sleep can leave you feeling groggy, dazed, and apathetic.  This of course not only affects your efficiency but also compromises the quality of your work.

3) Your Activity Level

If you spend most of your day sitting, then your energy levels are going to be on the lower side.  Make sure you stay energized throughout the day by taking breaks to walk around your office, choosing to take stairs over the elevators, or simply standing and stretching every once in a while.  Staying active will stimulate blood flow and will make you alert and more focused.

4) Lighting

While it makes sense that dim lighting would make you sleepy and less productive, even bright, artificial lighting can leave you feeling a little weary.  This is your body signaling that it needs a dose of natural light.  Getting out into the sunshine can prevent the brain from producing melatonin, a hormone that promotes feelings of sleepiness.   So, when you feel yourself starting to get drowsy, stepping outside your office can give you a boost that’ll help you be more productive.
