Eat These Heart-Healthy Foods This American Heart Month

Take care of your heart this February.

It’s American Heart Month, a month that asks us to take better care of our cardiovascular health.  For those of us who want to be healthier but not sure where to start, making small dietary changes is a wonderful way to take a more vested interest in our health.  Here are some of the heart-healthy foods that you should include in your diet to take care of your heart this February.

  • Avocados

Contrary to what you might believe, no all fat is bad for you.  The monosaturated fats found in avocados are extremely heart-healthy and have been linked to lower cholesterol levels and a reduced risk for heart disease.  Additionally, avocados are an excellent source of potassium which can help lower your blood pressure and risk of stroke.

  • Walnuts

While small, walnuts have major health benefits.  For instance, walnuts are rich in fiber and micronutrients such as magnesium, copper, and manganese.  According to research, eating walnuts can help lower bad LDL cholesterol levels, reduce diastolic blood pressure, and decrease oxidative stress and inflammation.  Other studies have suggested that ingesting walnuts can help you lower your risk for heart disease.

  • Berries

Berries are a great source of polyphenols, antioxidants that fight against damaging free radicals.  Additionally, berries offer a healthy dose of fiber and Vitamin C which have both been linked to lowering the risk of stroke.  Raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries are all great fruits to work into your diet this month.

  • Legumes

Legumes such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, and the like are a great source of soluble fiber, which has been proven to lower your bad LDL cholesterol.  As an added bonus, legumes are a much more heart-healthy source of protein than fatty red meats and processed meat products.

These are some of the foods that you should eat to take care of your heart this February.  Are you looking for assistance with your workers compensation or small business insurance this month?  If so, contact the experts at PMC Insurance Group.  We are ready to get you the coverage that you need today.
